You hold KQxx Jxx Axx Kxx.

Starting with partner:

1D p 1S 2H
3S 4H 4S 5H
p p ?

You are red vs white at teams.

Looks like a 30 point deck. I don't really think partner made a forcing pass, but he didn't saw them off either. I'm going big this time (since I tucked my tail and went home in the other thread). I'm debating between 6 and 6, but think I'll just go with the latter.

I'd bid 5S.

5

I think pard is 4144.
Pard bid at the 3 level, not the 4 level.

I credit the opps with making a good save.

For us to make 6 requires just 1 loser (presumably the heart).
He needs a stiff heart and all of:
S: A
D: K Q
C: A Q

(and maybe the spade J if they are 4-1 unless it can be finessed.
If pard has less, you can still make 6 if a finesse works.

To make 5 means 1 additional loser.

For a bid at the 3 level, I assume thats reasonable.

I think the opps are going for at least 300, and maybe 500.
5 hearts, and 3 spade ruffs, so lead hearts twice. Then 5H + 2 ruffs.

We take at least:
1 Spade, 4 dimes/clubs.

650 vs 300 or 500

650 is better but can you get it?

I think the odds are close enough that its worth bidding, even with this balances hand.
If you make 3/7 vs 500 you are around break even.
Vs 300 you need more.

I think 5S can make.

Does 3 show a full-value raise? I usually use 3 as a high card raise, and 3 as something like a 4153 12-count.

Opposite a real raise, I'd have done something different on the round before. Opposite the weaker type, I'd bid 5.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Pass is forcing if you agree its forcing.

Gilbert held a very similar hand in the KOs on Friday in LV. He bid 5. I held a 4=1=5=3 - trump were 4-1 so I couldn't scramble 11.

I would double and I'm prepared to lose 3 or lose 8.

Double since my shape stinks and I'm not totally convinced 5 is making.

If partner had really crazy distribution then he might have bid 4 instead of 3.

Results: Han Xed, I thought 5S was the right call. My hand was AJTx x KQJTx Jxx or something. 5S would make and 5H went for 500.
