I'd like to investigate 4 (can be the winner on a 4-3 fit) but can't see how to do it, a cue would make us too high ofteb.

How about 3, assuming that you play that as showing reversing values? If that elicits 3 or 4 you're probably about to reach the right game rather than the wrong one; if he bids 3 you can bid 3NT and have lost nothing; if he bids 4 he probably has five of them.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

On some days partner has 10xx and on other days they underlead th KQ vs 3NT. Do they still call Xmas for such days? :P

It may not seem rationale to expect by partner to bid 3N. I think nice extra values with given hand. I admit a difficult choice. Sometimes everything is a gamble.
