NV v V at MP, you hold

Q AK87652 7532 A

RHO opens 4 in 3rd seat.

Go quietly or stick you neck out? Does it make a difference if hrothgar is on your right?

Last time I bid 5 in a situation very similar to this I went for 1400 and everyone thought I was crazy to bid. But somehow it looks real tempting again....

Against a sane opponent, I pass. He may have his bid....

i think 5h is obvious. your hand suggests 4S is cold. you're at green. i'm not expecting to make 5H but however bad the breaks are i'm not expecting to go for a fat penalty.

in fact a bigger danger might be they get to 6S after I bid - 4S - 5h - 5s - p - 6S when opener raises himself looking at a heart void when it was just going to go 4S all out. not very likely though so it's not going to stop me

If hrothgar is on my right it's likely that he has 7114 therefore the chances of a double fit are higher.

This is only a marginal effect and it doesn't change anything.

I've seen someone going for -1700 in a similar situation, and he had KQJT98. Naturally, his LHO had the remaining diamonds.

But 5 is really a no-brainer, regardless of preempt style.

5H is obvious, really doesn't matter if it is hrothgar.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

Can't even begin to imagine why you think that is relevant when you have a completely obvious bid (or even if you didn't have an obvious bid).
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

Thanks for the replies. I wondered how automatic 5 was, looks nearly unanimous.

For what it is worth, here is the full deal. I expect that most people did not open 4 (some must have had to deal with a 2nd seat 3 opening), because the board was nearly flat: all 680s for EW except for an 850 and two 1400s.

Scoring: MP

There were possibly some 1H openers too given that this is a Rule of 19 hand with 2 10s and 3 9s. In a weak field I'd expect almost every South to open that hand 3C. I would also expect most Wests to open their hand 1S (can't preempt with opening points, right? :) )

On the contrary, I would expect more passers in a weak field than in a strong field.

Even after seeing the full hand, I still vote for 5.
