East is a decent player, though not as good as he thinks he is. NS are an intermediate partnership. They've not discussed what to do with a hand like this on this auction. What's your call, and why?

Because 2S would be a cuebid, 3S would be a splinter, and 4S would be exclusion!
Seriously if they bid your suit the only option is to pass. This is not dangerous because partner won't pass it out with shortness (which we know he has).
We are not expecting to be able to defend 1S X, that is basically impossible, we are hoping to bid spades naturally at some point which involves starting with a pass.

Yes. Yes. I wish (partner doesn't know exclusion).

LHO has shortness too.
Okay, you make sense to me. At the table, I reasoned (if you can call it that) as you say regarding 2♠ and 3♠, and since we'd never discussed 4♠ on this auction, I thought perhaps she'd be on the same wavelength when I bid 4♠. She wasn't. She bid 4NT (1430), I bid 5♥ (I know, that's a lie, but we haven't discussed how to deal with voids either), she passed. down 5, undoubled. She said later that she thought I must have some kind of big hand with heart support. The full hand:
Nine of twelve tables played it in 4♠ making, but I don't know how the bidding went at those tables.
How would the bidding go, d'you think, after a pass?

Anyway I think pass is easy even if 4♠ is natural since you can always bid that next, even if it's like 1/20 to defend 1♠X why not go for it?

Yes, maybe 1/20 to defend 1S X, and 1/2 to have an accident over a direct 4S
Also, I'm not sure I would drive to 4S. We lack the spade 8, so we should have 3 trump losers most of the time. Of course sometimes we can single them in and then endplay them and stuff like that. I would like to see how the auction develops before committing though, maybe partner bids 2C rather than X and then my hand is really looking bad

yep shouldn't be dangerous to pass hope we don't have an 11 or 12 card ♠ fit

If you bid 2H after pd's 2C bid, that is where you will play the hand.
Pass followed by 2S and then 4S over partner's 2C for me.
