Pass.
When I preempt 2♦ in first or second seat partner could very well have a strong hand and start bidding.
He will be very disappointed with my dummy.

In third hand I would preempt 3♦, now partner can no langer harm us and they certainly have the power to make game, maybe more.

IMO _P = 10, 3♦ = 8, 2♦ = 7
Just a matter of partnership agreement.You license pre-empts on a sliding scale e.g.

• 2nd seat, vul, at teams: 3 ♦ = 7 card suit, 2 top honours. 2♦ = Good 6 card suit, 2 top honours or 3 honours. 5-9 HCP.
• 1st seat, vul, at teams: a bit less rigorous but not much.
• 3rd seat, not vul, at pairs: Licence to Kill.

I gave fluffy a point for his terse, and absolutely correct, post. Why do so many people think it is a crime to pass when holding a long suit, and a hand that doesn't come close to meeting partner's expectations for a preempt?

Given the comments, perhaps he should have written "No one would open this 3♦." Except for Rex obviously.

IMO 3N = 10, _P = 8, _X = 6, 4♥ = 4, assuming that a first in hand vulnerable pre-empt shows a good suit, so partner is quite likely to have ♦A

I don't like the pass with Jay's hand, either we have some heart fit and do it ok in 4 hearts, or we don't and 4♠ can go for a number, with all a guess I bid 4♥ so opponents can make last mistake.

Two things : I owe Rex an apology as I went over the top in my snarky comments.

Second, I didn't like pass or 4♥, so I doubled thinking I had 4 tricks and while I didn't think Rex had the A♦, I felt he would get at least a ♦ trick opposite my singleton. I was hoping to catch him on a great day with xxx x KQJxxxx xx where he could dump his clubs on my hearts and we send them for 300 or 500. It was not to be of course as they had 9 tricks easily.

I don't think 4♥ is a winning call, I would pass next time.

As I always say, don't preempt when your partner has a good hand, preempt when he has a bad hand. I will leave it to your telepathic system to know when.

The weaker your preempt is, the better your partners hand can be.
