I think it's better to combine a weak hand with a game-forcing one. You can do that with each minor, so you can show three strengths of each, eg:
double = interest in penalising
2♥ = clubs, game-forcing or weak
2♠ = diamond support, game-forcing or weak
2NT = clubs with secondary diamonds
3♣ = clubs, invitational
3♦ = diamond support, invitational

Well, I like my major suit honors enough to go for 3NT right away.

It means you can't make a non-forcing bid in clubs (unless you're using 2NT for that?)
With double, 2♥, 2♠, 2NT, 3♣ and 3♦ available, it ought to be possible to show all the hands you want.

It also means he can't raise diamonds if he has no stopper in a major, surely this comes up sometimes?

With my pard a 3nt bid shows specifically 4 x 3 13-15. I can bid 2♠ as limit + for ♦ but it denies this shape so I'm not sure I want to. We start double with anything else.
3nt also shows my major suit cards so I'm happy going forward if pard takes a move.
That's just our current agreement with room for improvement.

Well, as some have suggested, I doubled. I was slated by both partner and team-mates for this call, who said that some sort of cue (we hadn't particularly discussed what flavour of UvU we were playing).
Auction now proceeds as follows:
1D (2D) X (4S)
P P ?
What now?
No agreement as to what partner's pass shows.

How annoying! You now have to mastermind this hand. This underscores the virtues of UvU which you correctly didn't use because it was undefined in your partnership. Against reasonably solid citizens bid 5♦. Against wildmen dbl. The club and heart hooks should be on, but every suit is breaking badly, and your QJx is worthless on offense.

I doubled again. The predictable -590 with 7D cold our way.

Very interesting. The straight 3NT is likely to be rested. The diamond support bid strikes gold here.
