So I sit down dealing the boards for my teams match this evening, and tell the opponents about the wild set of boards I played on Friday where I kicked off with a 7-5-1-0 hand.

Anyway, we start playing, I look at my cards and see:

RHO opens 1 so I bid 2 showing / good/bad, partner bids 2, I decide I'll look on tghe rosy side, bid 5 exclusion, he bids 5 showing A, I bid 5N asking for the Q and partner bottled out and bid 6 picking up 2 imps against the superior 6 at the other table.

Partner's hand:

Not sure how frequent 7510s are, but to get two of them as my first boards of my last 2 sessions is uncanny, this one was a lot better than the x, Jxxxxxx, void, xxxxx I had the previous time.

Why did your partner panic over your 5NT bid?

He decided (in fact in some ways correctly, it's not a wonderful grand, 60% ish) that 2-1 in my suits wasn't going to be great.

Yes but he doesn't know you don't have AKQJ of ds. He should trust you.

This is what I said to him, I might have had the J or 10.

What difference does it make what his cards are or what he thinks of them? When you ask a specific question (Q?), you deserve a true answer.

Agreed, he also has played with me for a long time, so knows that I would bid like this with what I actually had (I can hardly have any less although I'd be tempted with AKQJxxx, AK10xx or AKQxxx, AKxxxx hoping he had 3 spades).

Panic is emotional, not rational.

Sometimes you worry that your bid showed something other than you thought, and partner is going to expect a better hand. Of course this isn't true when partner simply asks you to take a preference, but that doesn't stop you from worrying.
