people who watch TV tend to zap between channels instead of reading a TV guide.

Do they really? I don't think this behaviour is very common these days, when most people have cable or satellite.

No clue, I don't really have a TV. Do people actually read through the guide?

You seemed sure of yourself in your last post before this! Anyway, there is usually a channel that has all the listings.

Well, I assumed the world hadn't changed much in that regard, and also thought it was clear from my post I'm not one of those people AND I put a "tend" in there. So plenty of disclaimers.

The TV world has changed quite a bit. If you have cable or satellite TV, you have hundreds of channels, so just flipping through channels doesn't work too well. These systems now have on-screen guides that you can scroll through, and some can even be controlled over the Internet so you can use a smartphone/tablet app.

Cool. Apart from my poor choice of analogy, is everyone a bit more sympathetic to "hoppers" now?

I still think it's clear that an improved TM2FSA is the key to resolving this problem. While it's certainly right for you to not even bid one hand if you land at an SEF table, OP is right that too many people leave willy-nilly, which is disruptive and annoying.

I agree completely - I pointed out some possible improvements in this thread, in some suggestion threads in this forum, and in the recent BBO ratings threads QuantumCat also suggested a possible method.
Other than that, what I'm mostly on in this thread is providing a counterpoint to those who think it's a good idea to limit the ability to hop, since I don't want to be a silent (I think) majority.

This also ties in to the rating system conversation; if players were not able to lie about their skill levels, incoming players would be better able to find a suitable place to play, and hopping should decrease.

Which is what I mean by this: "in the recent BBO ratings threads QuantumCat also suggested a possible method" in the post above yours.
