Just wanted to check my judgement here. Scoring for both is Butler IMPs. Sitting left of the dealer, all red you pick up:

S: AJ7
H: T864
D: Q97
C: J85

Playing something resembling 2/1 GF, this is a pass, and it's passed around to partner who opens a 14-16 NT (I know that fourth in a 15-17 is probably better but this is what you are playing). Do you invite? Would this be different in another seat?

3rd in all red, partner passes (you open all 11 counts), RHO bids 3D. You hold:

S: AQJ43
H: KQ76
D:
C: T743

I elected to make a takeout double, and partner bid 2H 3H. What should I do next?

e: Fixed a mistake on the second hand.

1) No and No - this quacky 8 count is more like 7 in strength and 6 after we consider shape.
2) 3 - Of course partner might have a perfect 9-loser that makes 10 tricks....

1) Pass.

2) I would pass 2H.

Disclaimer: I held these hands, so know the boards.

1. I invite opp. 15-17, but only vul at IMPs and pass opposite 14-16. If partner accepts I don't expect the game to be great, but there is usually play. On the actual hand opponents led 4th from longest and strongest so there were no problems.

And no, I'm not going to try and defend the invitation as "good". It just works more often than it should.

2. Assuming partner bid 3 pass is clear. But partner's bid should be scrutinised rather more closely.

Edit: I just looked at partner's hand on the first one. I'm not one for upgrading aggressively, but woof.

The first is a clear pass IMO. I don't think game makes often enough to make it worth looking for.

The second seems to involve an insufficient bid. Was the opening 2 or was partner's bid 3?

1. game makes, else- why is there a question? Easy pass at the table...

2. Well I would pass 3 or 2 over 3 and 2 and 2 over 3 but not 3 over 2.
Kind Regards

I'm passing both and prepared to be wrong on the 2nd hand (3H I presume). Partner would certainly have bid 4 with any kind of decent values.

No, and I wouldn't invite if we were playing 15-17 NT either.

Summon the director.

Absolutely not. If RHO passed over partner's 2, he has accepted the insufficient bid and there is no reason to either bother the director or to call it to the attention of any of the other players.

Eh yeah, that should have been bid 3H, let me edit that post...

and yeah, game makes both hands. We're both still pretty raw so while one of the guys at the club strongly advised I should bid 4H, we both concluded that partner should probably bid 4H with a goodish 9 count.

Of course you should not invite when you have a combined 22-24 points balanced. IMO it would be awful to invite even over a 15-17 NT with such a bad 8 count but that is a different story.
