Sorry for the first post. This is what I intended.

What does West need for a Take Out Double here with a 1-4-4-4 hand
Is 8pts enough NV?

Thank you

Try stepping into a live auction with 8 points a few times and you will get a clear enough answer.

In case that is not clear, the answer is no.

But you don't need much more. A good 11 HCP with that shape is sufficient, especially if you have extra intermediates (10's and 9's). For example:

x AJT9 QTxx AT9x

would be a clear takeout double, while

a KJxx QJxx KJxx

would be borderline.

I suspect that others might consider my last example a clear double rather than borderline.

Colours and form of scoring matter. Love All at Pairs you have to be aggressive, although even then 8 is lower than most will go. At other times it is probably best only to jump in here with some reasonable prospect of game opposite 13-14hcp balanced, so Art's 11hcp guideline is about right.

I agree with Zelandakh at matchpoints NV get in there. At Imps or MP vul I want 11 pts with good shape and some intermediates.
