I'm debating heading over to Europe for a week between XMas and New Years

Probably do three nights in Barcelona and another three in either Rome or Venice.
I'm a bit worried that the countries will be shut down those weeks. (Especially museums and the like)

Any practical advice from the locals?

its christmass, all shops open, all transporst are working, and bars won't close untill 3 am. People only get 25 december free (and january 1), rest of the days they are going to work unless they spend their vacation days.

No idea about musseums.

The most interesting museum in Europe at the moment ......the high-security-wing of the Munich police building.
There are several media reports today, about sensational found by the german custom police. They have found
in Munich about 1500 paintings and drawings by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Emil Nolde, Franz Marc, Max Beckmann, Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner und Max Liebermann....many of them confiscated or stolen by the Nazis in the 30s and 40s....

Barcelona is my favorite city.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket
