Do you have favourite quotations? An old and well known one of mine is:

No man is an island,
entire unto itself,
girt by the sea.
Send not to know,
for whom the bell tolls,
it tolls for thee.

This is from memory and may not be exact. :)

That is from John Donne, I also like Milton:

A dungeon horrible, on all sides round,
as one great furnace flamed
but from those flames, no light,
but rather darkness visible,
served only to discover
sights of woe, regions of sorrow
where peace and rest can never dwell
but torture still urges
and a fiery deluge fed
with ever burning sulphur, unconsumed.

Your turn?

I always loved a phrase from sean Connery on a movie about Japanese culture in America (don't know the english name)

He says something like:

We (americans) look for whose to blame, they (japanese) look for the solution, their method is better.

He who learns must suffer.
And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart,
and in our own despair, against our will,
comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God.

giving freely while his father lives
so that afterwards in age when fighting starts
steadfast companions will stand by him
and hold the line. Behaviour that’s admired
is the path to power among people everywhere. -- from Seamus Heaney's translation of Beowulf

Are those really who said that? I associate the first with Omar and the second with Marlo.

This one is attributed to many people, although it sounds like the kind of things Berra was known to say.

Heh. Many (most?) familiar quotations get attributed to people who didn't originate them (or say them at all). Or to quote Yogi Berra, "I didn't say half the things I said."
