2 as a good spade raise seems right, and I'd pass 2 by partner

Yeah it's only awkward if for some strange reason you aren't playing 2 as showing exactly this hand (or better).

I slightly prefer double probably followed by 2 hoping to show the power raise next round instead of shape.

fwiw a cuebid or double are often the best options when you have an awkward bidding problem. :)

Agree with others: 2 = 10, Double = 9, 2 = 8.

My initial idea was 2, but maybe DBL followed by 2 is better?
What is the difference?: Both show invite+ values, but starting with DBL is more balanced and based on points?

Your followup plan for double should be which card to lead against 1NT doubled, not a bid.
Even if partner takes it out to a minor, your subsequent 2 will look like a preference, not 3-card support. Only if opener takes out your double will this plan work.

X

Lets see, how the auction develops, the chances, that we can make 4S
are low, I willing to give up on it.
Depending on partners style, I can still bid 3S, if I really want.

I was his pd. I think dbl is a very bad idea, for the reasons Arend already stated. Imo 2 is correct.

Fwiw, I like 2 much more than dbl, if I was to choose between one of them. If you start dbl, and if someone takes it out for whatever reason and it comes back to you as 3 or 3 you have a problem. At this point you are on your own since pd has no clue about the fit by your dbl. Which may or may not turn out to be a very costly problem if you now decide wrong. But if you show your fit and your strength at 2 level while you can, you will not have this problem.

The vul is wrong for X so 2H is normal. Note that most of the times its not a big deal to double with 3 spades, if partner pass 1nt its 1ntx and if he pull to a minors than hes miminum and you dont have game anyway. Its when its the opps that pull that you may have a problem.

Now its likely that partner would like to know if you have 2 or 3 trumps.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

I really don't understand double. For me double 100% denies 3 spades.

Either you are playing 2 = good raise with 3 spades, or you are not. If you are, it's obvious. If not, I prefer 2 to X, as it may be awkward or too late otherwise to show them later.

How about a low ODR 3=5=(3-2) or 3=4=3=3? FWiiW I also saw this as a wtp 2.

So you are playing penalty doubles now? Or what would you hope to accomplish with double?

I mean, if you have 5 hearts, then your partner has approximately 1 heart. Meanwhile they rate to have a 4-card minor opposite your doubleton. Certainly you can decide that any heart honors are likely to be useless and downgrade to 2 if appropriate, but the fact remains, you have 3 card support, so if you bid at all then showing that is your first priority.

You can go ahead and play 2, 2, 2NT, 3 AND 3 all as spade raises, that should give you plenty of options to describe any possible spade raise you want. But support with support, please.

1. Double is responsive.
2. Even if it's not it's a bad idea with a fit.
