Ugh, so many quacks. I'll need at least a black king more to act.

Hi, with a bidding like that showing almost 24-25 points my partner should have a K+J..or only a J. In these situations it needs sure to beat 4. Fourthemore i use (a little variant of) rule of 7 (for double) than i don't double (bidding is not ended..let's wait also to avoid XX - i.e. if N-S have unbalanced hand or so ?), bye.

That bidding doesn't show anything like 24-25 points: they would have bid differently if that were likely. They could have as few as about 14 hcp and the most likely range is some way short of 24.

I'd like something a little better than this duck pond to X here, noting that my NV PD passed initially.

[AJ86 7 AQJ7 Q765] I would definitely double.

[KJ86 7 AQJ7 Q765] & [Q986 7 AQJ75 K76] are right on the edge.

But with so many Quacks, I think I'd pass this hand.

Pass. We have the shape but not the strength for a double.

BBO forum,

Very possible that south bid game based on looser count and not points.
He may also have some distribution that yields dummy points.
Certainly they have a 9+ card heart suit so partner has at most 3.

I think the decision comes down to knowing how good the OPS are.

Agree with Mr Ace: Double = 10, Pass = 8, 4 = 5. Borderline.

There are some indicators, here. 1) if 4H is the typical preempt, my partner has only two hearts and didn't double or overcall. Opener has extras and we will go for a number. 2) If it is a Precision pair, we will go for a number.

Hi,

system matters.

If the opponents play a limited system, the 4H bid can be based on a fairly strong hand.
If the opponents have only a limited experience / agreement set, again the 4H bid can be based on a fairly strong hand.

On average they will have the majority of the deck, we know, where 25/26 points are, but this assumes opener has a min,
never a good basic assumption, the raise will be based on at least min response values, hence it is quite likely that
they have half+ of the deck.
They have a 9 card fit, we will have a 8 card fit.
Partner did not overcall 1S, this means we will at best have a 9 card fit without AK in spades, i.e. if we have a spade fit,
it will usually be a 8 card fit, chances are, that our fit is in a minor. Playing on the 5 level in a 8 card fit with
at most half of the deck is fun, ... for the opponents.

If we double, the next in line is the opnener, he has a very cheap way of making clear, that he has more than min XX.
4H wont be down a lot, if at all, so XX is quite lucrative and it starts the hunt for blood.
If you want to bid, 4S is a lot better, this makes it a lot harder for opener to tell partner, that he has a nice hand,
and it is the contract we want to play anyway, if we enter now.

In short: Pass. Just because 1 of the opponents did make a weak bid does not make our hand stronger.

Add a King, than you have a high probabillity, that we own half of the deck, and we can start talking about thinking to
bid, it still would be borderline.

With kind regards
Marlowe

Am I the only one who did not even consider X here was for penalty ? (for me X is 100% takeout)

I would pass this. And X with at least [AJxx x AQJx Qxxx] or [QJxx - AQ10xx Q10xx]
Tired of red/black ♠♥♦♣.
For 4 suits, why not 4 colors ?
