Yes and Andrew Robson even says "Don't Gild The Lily" in his matchpoints book.

Maybe it is more popular on that side of the pond.

Regardless of which side of The Pond we're on, I have a more harsh opinion than OP does. To bid 2N over 2♠, and try to play 3m instead of 2♠, could reasonably be described as trying to gild the lily. Bidding 3♦, apparently non-forcing, is just bad when it could be opposite shortness.

This is not even gilding the lily, it's just an awful call (i.e., worse than gilding the lily). Making a pass/correct on 2344 would be gilding the lily arguably. Or bidding 2♠ on a bad 6-card spade suit and 2 hearts after 1NT-2♥-p-.

edit: yikes, I just wrote the exact same thing as Bbradley above! leaving this comment here to serve as a reminder: stay in school! literacy is important!

Strangely I played a similar hand today,and it seems that BBO have fixed this issue at once,now look at my hand ,its bidding is same with you:
