4 should *not* be routine with a spade void. In fact, it should demand slam facing second-round diamond control.

OK, Jillybean has got the hand diagram wrong, a small spade should be a small diamond so my pre-edit comment was garbage.

Questions:

What are your responses to 4 many people would treat it as voidwood and respond 5 2+Q
If you don't play voidwood, has partner denied a diamond control by bidding 4 rather than 4
Since 1-3 agrees hearts, what is 3N ? If it is a weak NT type hand, this is not unreasonable

If you have 2 fast diamond losers, partner has at most void, J10xxx, QJxx, AQJx while this is a splinter, is it worth 4 over 4 ? You would feel a bit of an idiot if partner had Axx, Qxxxx, Kxx, Kx and you went off in 5.

In Italian style control bidding, after 3S one of 4D and 4H is always correct (either you have a diamonds control or you do not). Most pairs don't even assign a meaning to a direct 4S, although I guess that's a violation of useful space principle and it should have some meaning (such as spades, diamonds and clubs, or spades and diamonds inviting Void Turbo or Voidwood replies)... but that's learning to run before you walk, KISS.
