No difficulty in identifying analogous behaviour with Boxes :(
But I still don't understand how it works: my solution 3, one grabs the pad, writes the call and replaces the pad in (supposedly) full view?

In my limited experience; the pad is placed in the middle of the table, everyone has their bid and at the end of the auction the pad is removed by North, top sheet torn off and placed in small rubbish bin adjacent to table, or dropped in a growing pile on the floor. Players sometimes move the pad closer to see or to make their bid, otherwise it remains in the middle.
