Support doubles?

I play them on, but there are reasons not to. You should consider passing the double, particularly if opps are vulnerable.

Support, can be converted of course.

I explicitly play "support doubles through 2 of responder's suit, but NOT 1NT." Like akwoo, I can see the benefits of the alternative, but this is what I learned and it works for me.
It's nice to be able to say "I have extras and their suit" when they have advertised a misfit.
It would also be nice for partner to know about the 5-3 major fit and competitive values *before* they find their red-suit (6-2? diamonds?) fit. But it's also not great to have to play the 20-20 misfit when you could quietly go -90 or -120 (or +100 if you're lucky).

Most would play that 1S promises 5+ spades, in which case, given that the opps are advertising values (and 1N implies defence), we’re probably not heading towards game. That means I could bid 2S on 3 card support which in turn negates the primary purpose of the support double. Ok, it may still help partner to know whether I have 4 or 5 but using the double as support here makes it too easy for LHO to bid 2D or 2H, neither of which can he do over 2S.
Now, in my regular partnership, 1S is a takeout for the minors (we can be as much as 3=3=5=2 for 1C so responder, with both minors, needs a way to tell me where our fit is) and we double with 4-5 spades (2H shows 6+ spades, weak to strong) so if we had this start, partner would double 1H and now I need to be able to distinguish between 3 and 4 card support, so I’d have a good use for double.
This, as is so often the case, how one uses a call depends on the context. In a standard method, I think double is best used as ‘I think I can beat this’. But I doubt that either approach is, in the real world, likely to be demonstrably better than the other. Each will gain sometimes, each will lose sometimes. So just be sure you and partner agree on its meaning
