When I play equal level conversion, it applies only to converting clubs to diamonds. With a five card major, I just overcall it.

On both of your hands, I would overcall 1.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Of course easy to say what applies when I play ELC because I never play it, but I used to.

Playing strength to the level you force the bidding if pard bids your short suit. Example:

(1) .. dbl (pass) 2
(pass) 2 = about 14-15 hcp or less with compensating shape (e.g. a 4/6)

But, yeah, as said, with a 5 card suit that you can bid at level 1, an overcall usually preferable.
