Official BBF The Wire thread

Any other "The Wire" fans out here?
We started to watch it on DVD several weeks ago and immediately got hooked. For those who don't know about it, it is the best TV series ever. Not close. The plot is a bit too complicated for a weekly TV series though, so it didn't have as much success right away on TV as it deserved (I think it's doing extremely well on DVD).

Right now it's a bit of a surreal experience. We are at season 5, where things are getting more and more surreal. Meanwhile, the news these days are turning more and more into a The Wire script with the LA Times/Chicago Tribunue/Baltimore Sun bankruptcy, and the Blagojevich arrest today...

Best show ever!

I recommend subtitles for non-native English speakers. And for some native ones.

I wasn't as excited with season 1, my favorite is season 4. I'm a teacher, btw.

Too violent and crude for me but my husband loves it. I am more the Doc Martin and The Office type. They always cancel ones I like - Six Feet Under, for instance.

Just as a heads up, Best Buy is currently selling the complete set for $90.

Picked it up yesterday, one disc in and already hooked. Does it REALLY stay this good the entire series?

George Pelecanos, who wrote the script for 7+ episodes of "The Wire", will discuss his work and his latest crime noir "The Turnaround" at the Central Library in Arlington, Virginia on January 26th at 7:00 PM. Esquire magazine calls Pelecanos "the poet laureate of the D.C. crime world."

I just finished watching episode 8 of the first season. This is one excellent program.

I wish the tuning of my ear to the "blingo" was a bit sharper but since I am watching the french sub-titled torrents, I read them when I don't catch the entire meaning....altho sometimes the translation is a bit off when I do know what they said...lol

Looks like I will be up for the entire series :D

I especially like the development of the characters as the story line progresses. Bubbles is my favorite actor.

My wife and I went to the Arlington library last night to hear George Pelecanos talk about his writing. This guy is real and he knows DC. The most interesting thing about The Wire so far for me is it's strange combination of toughness, alienation and humanism (caring for others). After listening to Pelecanos for an hour, I can see where a lot of that comes from. Not that it comes mainly from him or that we're talking about a new-age sensitive crime writing guy here. He's definitely old school, for his age, but also incredibly attuned to the world he lives in and empathetic with its inhabitants, on both sides of the line that divide "us" from "others". His new book, The Turnaround, sounds interesting. DC has been turning itself around for some time now. I am curious to see what other types of turnarounds Mr. P. has decided to write about. He mentioned that this is his most autobiographical work to date.

By the way, the library auditorium was packed.

p.s. to non fans - The Wire is set in Baltimore, not DC. But the two cities are practically neighbors.

I agree. The Wire is by far the best show in the history of TV. It is like a novel in the in depth development of characters, but still includes the entertainment and humor of a TV show.

There are so many good characters and good scenes and good lines in The Wire.
