When making this decision, it can help to consider that partner may have a strongish hand (16-17 HCP) with 3541 distribution who is planning to bid 2♠ over your 2♥ (false) preference.

If you are happy to play in 2♦ when he has this hand, then passing becomes a stronger option.

That is clearly not the case here.

When you've got 5 of your own suit, the preference is compellingly better - you still have one chance left of getting to a 5-3 fit. Even with 2 hearts and 4 diamonds you may be willing to bid 2H when you are hoping to hear from partner again (i.e. you are near-maximum and/or have 5 spades.)

Another reason to take preference is that minimum hands tend to play better in 5-2 fits than 4-3. It's possible that opener is 5-5, but you shouldn't expect it. And he also could be 6-4 with extra values.

My bidding with 5431 hands is pretty much the same in all seats.

2H is a wtp.

#1 5-2 fits play usually better than 4-3 fits
#2 given that you are still interested oppossite a 16/17 count,
2H keeps the bidding alive
#3 opener may bid 2S the next round

Any of the above listed reasons are justifiying a 2H response,
you and all are valid for the given hand.

#4 depening on your agreement set, the 2D bid may have been made
on a 3 card suit.

This is most likely not relevant for partnerships from North America.

#5 If you always make the wrong decision, than making always the same,
ensures, that you right a reasonable amount of time.
