The vast majority of them seem to be people who simply want to either (1)have something uniform about their tournaments (everyone from the same country or playing the same system, etc.) or (2) keep their own list of bad eggs and be able to ban them from their tournaments.

The history of the private clubs:

Long time ago, the rumour was being spread in the political extremist community that CIA was unable to decode the non-english characters used in the bbowin client. They therefore created private clubs on bbo to facilitate their secret meetings. The many clubs with names ending on "refugees" are testimony of that.

Since the advent of the flash client, the private rooms are not safe to use for that purpose. So today there will rarely be created new clubs, and the old clubs are largely used by revolutionary-nostalgics. You will see a lot of Che Guevara t-shirts if you inspect the profile pictures of the people playing there.

Sorry to OP if I find this thread confusing. Sorry to the rest of the community for attempting to address it seriously.
It started out asking about private competitions, and meandered into discussion about private clubs, which are another thing altogether.
And the thread title implies a perception that the situation is currently getting progressively more biased in favour of restricted entries, but I am unconvinced that it is.

On the subject of clubs, there have been no new private clubs for a long time (or public for that matter). They were largely an experiment created during the infancy of BBO, and with a very few exceptions a failed experiment at that. The vast majority of private clubs get no use or extremely limited use. As players migrate to Flash these dinasaurs will ebb further into oblivion. Hijacking BBO? I hardly think so. But as to their purpose, I think that the name of the club generally says it all, in each case.

Dedicated clubs have served their intended purpose on occasion. Although they are public clubs, the Acol club and the Total Points club have by reason of their existence assisted in allowing like-minded players to gravitate together in a manner that would have been more difficult without the clubs' existence. The Beginner/Intermediate club is a private club which restricts entry so as to provide such players with a less threatening environment, in which regard it serves very well.

As to private competitions (as opposed to clubs), a large number of competitions have, and always have had, a variety of restrictions on entry, some by employing a growing list of excluded players based on behaviour in the competition, some requiring positive entry vetting at the outset. The criteria for inclusion or exclusion could be almost anything that the host dreams up. Speaking a common default language other than English is a popular one. Requirement of an entry fee to fund Master points, a proper TD and prize money is another. BBO just provides the software and it is no reflection on BBO the manner in which certain hosts choose to arrange their tourneys.

So far, the proliferation of restricted-entry competitions does not (as far as I am aware) impose a significant restriction on resources available to run unrestricted events, should a host be minded to run one, and only when those resources become noticeably limited should there be any justification for concern.
