Match pointed pairs

What's your next move and why did you choose this option?

2. I bid what I have.

Perhaps partner has a penalty pass of 2. But I have 10 cards in two suits and I am going to show my suits.

If it went 1H (2C) X (P) back to me, where X is penalty, would I be happy passing. Maybe I should be, but I'm not completely. Therefore I bid 2D. If I let opponents off their 1100, so be it.

I stretch to balance with a double because I like smacking ops around :)

What's the worst that can happen? Playing spades probably won't be a disaster. Or I could pull 2 to 3 which is an overbid I can live with.

This sequence is one which I feel simulations would dictate what action you should take here quite nicely. I reckon partner has a penalty pass on a very high percentage of deals. I double.

I've never belonged to the church of 'don't double with a void'. I've always felt with RHO not raising that my void simply means that partner has room for more trump. Here, double is 1000% in my book:

1. They are in two of a minor so -180 isn't going to wreck my day like -670 will.

2. I have some pretty nice defense between my aces and and QJx. This isn't some flimsy 5-5 Rule of 20 I decided to open - I have a sound opener.

3. I have good support for spades in case partner has long spades and could not make a negative double. If I bid 2, partner will be discouraged about bidding two spades with 5-2 or maybe even 6-2 in the majors. If partner bids diamonds over my double, my hand becomes pretty valuable.

This is interesting - with the void, partner almost certainly has a bunch of clubs. The thing that worries me is that I probably only have 2 defensive tricks, thus needing partner to come up with four (so even xxx QJ Qxx KJxxx wouldn't be enough, but partner would still pass).

Having said that, anything better than that example hand and 2C is going down for a nice fat 200 (I assume they are vulnerable given the red in the hand diagram), and this is pairs...

Having said THAT, I doubled 3C for penalty just the other day and they ran to 3D+1 for a bottom our way. What if they have the spades? And with 10+ points partner might well have tried 2NT or something (depending on methods).

On balance, therefore, I'll wimp out and pick 2D.

2 is the L.A. not suggested by partner's B.I.T. Pass is not logical at all.

Regardless of that, I would still have to claim "I forgot", if playing with someone who believes his pass demands a reopening double.

No one mentioned any break in tempo in connection with this problem.

Yet. The day is still young. I was taking literary license, but thanks for pointing that out to me.

Absolutely no BIT.

This is bidding question, not an ethics question!

In that case, I would bid 2D as a judgement decision, rather than as the only action available.

I asked Mickyb about this, saying I'd probably bid 2 at the table and think I was supposed to double. He said, "That's strange, I'd probably double and think I was supposed to bid 2.".

Just out of curiosity, did either of you factor in all those times when responder doesn't have a penalty pass of 2CX, didn't have a good action over 2C, and will do the unsuccessful thing when you reopen with a double ---having no clue that you have ten red cards and a void club? We don't need to consider the thought that they have a part score or game in spades, because we are going to reopen, and whether it is a double or 2D, they will find spades if appropriate.

I'm bidding 2 .

It's often right that partner with a trump stack behind overcaller needs a trump lead though the long suit to prevent an endplay and defeat the contract. I can't provide that, so defensive prospects are somewhat diminished.

I double, I'm perfectly happy with my defense, plus if I bid 2 and we belong in spades it will be difficult to figure out.
