Perhaps partner has a penalty pass of 2♣. But I have 10 cards in two suits and I am going to show my suits.

What's the worst that can happen? Playing spades probably won't be a disaster. Or I could pull 2♠ to 3♦ which is an overbid I can live with.

1. They are in two of a minor so -180 isn't going to wreck my day like -670 will.
2. I have some pretty nice defense between my aces and and QJx. This isn't some flimsy 5-5 Rule of 20 I decided to open - I have a sound opener.
3. I have good support for spades in case partner has long spades and could not make a negative double. If I bid 2♦, partner will be discouraged about bidding two spades with 5-2 or maybe even 6-2 in the majors. If partner bids diamonds over my double, my hand becomes pretty valuable.

Having said that, anything better than that example hand and 2C is going down for a nice fat 200 (I assume they are vulnerable given the red in the hand diagram), and this is pairs...
Having said THAT, I doubled 3C for penalty just the other day and they ran to 3D+1 for a bottom our way. What if they have the spades? And with 10+ points partner might well have tried 2NT or something (depending on methods).
On balance, therefore, I'll wimp out and pick 2D.

Regardless of that, I would still have to claim "I forgot", if playing with someone who believes his pass demands a reopening double.

No one mentioned any break in tempo in connection with this problem.

This is bidding question, not an ethics question!

In that case, I would bid 2D as a judgement decision, rather than as the only action available.

Just out of curiosity, did either of you factor in all those times when responder doesn't have a penalty pass of 2CX, didn't have a good action over 2C, and will do the unsuccessful thing when you reopen with a double ---having no clue that you have ten red cards and a void club? We don't need to consider the thought that they have a part score or game in spades, because we are going to reopen, and whether it is a double or 2D, they will find spades if appropriate.

It's often right that partner with a trump stack behind overcaller needs a trump lead though the long suit to prevent an endplay and defeat the contract. I can't provide that, so defensive prospects are somewhat diminished.
