Is 4NT pick-a-minor? If not, 5D.

I´d go for the minors. LHO leading a spade against 3NT could be ugly, and 4NT has a bigger chance of being raised to a winning slam than 3NT

I am close btn 3n and pass and
choose 3n primarily because it
is difficult to see setting 3h
more than 2 tricks and it is
easy to imagine 9 tricks in 3n.
Spades could be problematic but
unlikely to be a disaster with
p behind any spade length.

If p now bids 4s we can now bid 4n
to warn them of the extreme shortness
we have in spades. p will then be able
to figure out we have the minors since
we didn't sit for 3h x. it is possible
4n will still be our last playable game.

Just too much of our value is in hearts to
insist on 5 of a minor. IMO 3n = 9 pass = 7
insisting on a minor = 3.

4N anytime. Anything else would be extremely strange.

Are there many hands which make 5 m but not 3 NT? May you construct some for me?

I go for the most popular game with minors- 3 NT.
With four points in my long suits, I do not fear to miss a slam.
Kind Regards

Roland

4NT is for minors but then is probably an underbid.

4H-4S-4NT should also be minors but slammish
4H-4S-5C/D should be single minor slammish
4H-4S-5H/5S should be spade slammish with heart control/looking for heart control

Since it is reopening, partner may be a little shaded say 11+. So will evaluate the hands in the context and bid accordingly....

xxxx, x, AKxxx, KQ10 would appear to make 5 (and 6 if no club ruff) but lose the first 7 in NT.

Even Axxx, x, AKxx, KQxx seems to only have 8 top tricks in NT, yet makes a slam in either minor barring a ruff.

4 NT seems best to me trying for a minor game.

Don't think we can beat 3 enough Dbld if preempter has made any kind of sane Vulnerable preempt. I'd expect something like QJ eighth or longer out of the preempter.

If partner has long strong , partner should have bid them.

Well, at least I was right about it being close according to the poll :)
I passed, and it was worth +1400.
Partner had:
AKTx Tx AKx AK8x so even grand was making (it wasn't a good grand though) with 6C being a laydown.

I polled some of my friends and most chooses 3NT. My partner agreed with a pass but wasn't sure about it.
At other table the bidding went:
2H pass pass 2NT
pass 3NT pass...

so it was 12 for our side but admittedly it was random bbo "expert" opposition so their actions don' mean anything ;)
As to 4NT we agreed it should be minors after initial pass but it would be natural by unpassed hand.
