Yeah with a stiff I think you have to do it despite the obvious risk involved. Too much chance 1N plays well and 2S plays well when you have a stiff imo. Also you might push them out of NT and into diamonds.

For some reason I always feel happier to raise partner when I have length in an unbid major. It feels like that should make it more difficult for the opponents to land on their feet.

I like the bid.
There's a gadget you might consider - If you play, say, Modified Capelletti over opponent's 1NT, try having responder use Mod Capelletti responses! Here you would bid 2♦ showing at least 3-card support of partner's ♠s and 5+ cards in ♥s. You also deny the ability to double for penalty....
