Theoretical question: What is the rebid when an opener does not have a stopper for a Western Cue bid?

Let us say auction goes:

1H 2S p 3S

What does opener rebid?

It seems to me that is nearly always better minor.

The auction you posted is of 4th chair raising his partner's preempt. If you meant:

1H (2S) 3S (P)
?....then 3S is a heart raise.

The Western Cue is not really practiced very much. However, when a minor has been opened and responder cues over an overcall, then opener will bid notrump with a stopper as the most intelligent thing to do --if it is. Lacking a stop, opener will usually return to his minor since the cue shows support for that minor.

If responder had a suit of his own, he would bid the suit. If not, he would have doubled. There are many of these situations where opener is smart enough to bid NT with a stopper in the opponents' suit without being specifically asked to do so.

A good rule of thumb for responding to this sort of cue bid - treat it as if partner has bid Fourth Suit Forcing. That should immediately make things more familiar. In other words bid NT with a stopper or make the best descriptive bid without. If partner is making the cue bid for some other purpose you will find out about it next round.
