It's clear to bid 8 with such a good suit.

Our second seat 7-level preempts tend to be sound, so I X for penalty.

Partner has 10-12 hearts and A for sure, the problem is if he has spade void or A. The way to ask is to make a forcing pass. Hopefully partner reads our A on his void. Now he can make an informed decision.

Double out of respect for partner's pre-empt. His bid was voluntary, but E's was forced and, at least, you should set him.

Partner has no way of knowing I hold an Ace if I pass. Maybe with two outside Aces and solid hearts, a double will let him bid 7NT. In that sense, a double might be read to mean "I don't have the Ace of Spades".

I have no clue if you are joking or not.

I expect my partner to have 13 tricks on hand, or perhaps miss Q/J, this requires first round control of all the suits.

Are you suggesting people don't have their bids? I trusted my partner

Partner is quite certain to have a club void if he can actually count 13 tricks. Culbertson suggested a forcing pass on a somewhat similar hand (Blue Book, 1930), provided you can trust partner to read it, otherwise double--opponent can't have the right cards to make 13 tricks in spades if
partner has the right cards to take 13 tricks in hearts. Odds are fairly good that a stacked deck and/or sobriety impairment are involved in this deal.

mike: I wouldn't be worried of partner pasing out, he has A or AK probably not very long.

Yes, pass shows one ace. With two aces I would bid 7NT. This deal is why you need to know if you play pass/double inversion or not :)

So 7!C is the better contract. It's a shame P couldn't read the situation and place you in the proper contract rather than 7!H.

Still waiting for PhilKing's post analysing all 2nd seat 7-level openings followed by an overcall.
Seems we could either agree that forcing pass shows one ace exactly (bid 7N with two, double with none). Or we could allow for a not completely solid trump suit, and require a little trump help (xx or singleton honour) plus an ace for a forcing pass - catering for the bad trump break that's now become likely.
I'll put it on my list of things to discuss with pickup partners 10 min before the game.

7NT is a good second best contract, RHO helped a bit :D
