Playing matchpoints, we hold J52 982 K AKJ843 and open one Club. Partner responds one Spade. Should we rebid our six-card Club suit, or should we supports partner's Spades with Jack third?
Would there be a different response playing imps?
Many thanks.

I would bid 2 spades
"definitely that's what I like to play when I'm playing standard - I want to be able to bid diamonds because bidding good suits is important in bridge" - Meckstroth's opinion on weak 2 diamond

System matters here:

Do you bid spades in front of diamonds with 4 of each ?
Would a 2 jump shift have been weak or strong ?

Many thanks for the comments so far. We are playing 4-card majors with a weak No Trump. A jump to 2S would be weak.
Responder's hand was K843 AK7 J98 965.

Our auction would be either:

1-1-2-2(art inv+)-2-2N-3/3N
1-1-2-2N-3/3N

In either case for us responder shows a 4333 11 ish, opener can choose whether to punt 3N.

I'm not sure which is best initially, if 2 would have been strong I think the WJS hands make 2 best, it's closer if you play 2 weak.

When you play weak notrump, raising partner's spades can't be based on a balanced minimum. So you show extras, or some distributional values. This makes it problematic to raise on 3-card support with a minimum.

I would rebid 2. You may get the chance to show the spades support later, while if you start with 2, I am not sure if you will be able to show that you have six clubs.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

Hi,

#1 Do you regular raise with 3 Card support Partner 4 Card suit?
Do you have Methods to detect, that you only have a 7 Card suit fit?
Do you by pass Diamonds, when Holding 4 Diamonds and a 4 Card Major, if you do,
the probability, that the spade suit is a 5 carder goes down, hence raising looses
some of ist Appeal.
Similar, if the opener was in 2nd seat, the Need to raise spades goes down.

#2 Given that 66% of all your HCPs are in your suit, I would rebid my suit.
#3 Playing MP, there is a adv. playing the Major, …, if you go plus, playing IMPs,
going plus is more important, if you have a spade fit and game, Partner will be
able to ask for secondary support.

Finnally, given that you are dead min, I would try to go slower, raising Partners Major
is a life Signal, and Partner may get excited, move the single king to another suit,
raising spades has a lot going for it.

With Kind regards
Marlowe

Raising a major to the two level on a three card suit in Acol is really only an option where you don't have any better alternative bid available. To supress a 'jolly' good six card suit headed by AKJ would be anti-bidding to me.

If partner has extras, you can show support on the next round.
