Playing Sandwich NT (4-4 or better in the unbid suits, less strength than a takeout double), this is easy.

If not, 1S, 2D, and double aren't terrible, especially at this vulnerability, but I pass. The opps are unlimited, I'm not quite strong enough for a takeout double, and I may not get to show 2 suits without overstating my strength.

X, the reason: it is safer than 1NT (provided that this shows
both suits), I can still play 1S.

Agree. I would X with less too.

No, I am bidding one spade. I plan on passing after this and leaving the rest to partner.

If the auction gets competitive can the overcall often be superior to the takeout double?

I don't understand overcalling 1S at all. You have 5 diamonds and 4 spades, why not get both suits into play? If the auction gets competitive it will be much better to have Xed since A) partner won't think you have 5 spades and :) you may need to compete or save in diamonds. The only time overcalling spades will be better is when partner has a guess on opening lead and has to lead spades, but you will be on lead vs hearts and vs NT a diamond lead is probably better anyways.

Thanks for asking. To further the discussion and not to disagree with your points Justin I add these notes.

I was wonder if overcalling one spade, gets us to a 4-3 spade fit and 2 level spades partial competitive fit when right at MP or a 4-4 sac in 4spades. Note on this hand we are at fav vul at MP.

I would double, I tend to give up on game after 1x-1y, so double over 1NT its more like a matter of shape.

If I agree that 1 NT is not natural but shows 4 Spades and 5 Diamonds, I will use this bid. In this case, I cannot double, because this would show another hand (4/4 in the suits f.e.)
Without this tool, I surely double to show exactly 4 Spades and around 4 Diamonds.
If the questions was, which way is better, I have no idea.
I think the majority prefer to have 1 NT still as an natural bid avaiable.
Kind Regards

Roland

I thought I had wandered into the wrong part of the forum, when I read this post... isn't this a B/I hand.. in which double is clear?

Double. It's MPs so bidding is clearly right. RHO has bid the major so there is less likelihood partner will be on lead, hence no need to bid 1S as lead directing - besides, we may be able to compete in diamonds and a 1S pretty much eliminates diamonds if LHO raises to 2H.

I voted double! ..without reading all the expert opinions first :)
Why? I have nice support in both unbid suits, the auction is at the 1lvl, I think my partner would expect 5 if i bid 1, I have both so, why not.

1NT. This shows longer/better diamonds. With longer/better spades I double.

Whether to double with this hand should belong on the B/I forum. Whether to double with less should not be there.
