I just ask for aces and kings then think, it is very likely to be a no brainer.

If we are off an ace, 6NT should be the right spot. We have a minimum of 34 HCP so partner must have the missing kings and making 12 tricks is not a problem.

I expected it to be a boring, flat board too but it turned into a 5.5/8

I do with one partner, but I don't think it follows from using 1N - 5N as quant. It is quite normal to play 1N - 4N as quantitative, offering partner a choice between game and slam, while 1N - 5N is quantitative, offering partner a choice between 6N and the 7 level.

Mike Lawrence wrote a book many years ago, in which the reader 'played along with him' through a matchpoint event with a decent but not great partner. On one hand, he opened 1N, partner bid 5N, and Lawrence explained that this was a quantitative bid forcing to 6N but inviting 7. He held a max so bid 7.
Dummy had KQx of hearts, and Mike held 10xx, and inferred from the lead that RHO held the A (and from the non double, plus the itchy look on RHO).
He had nowhere to go: even in 6N he needed the heart A onside or the J to be doubleton, and he knew the former wasn't working.
So at trick 2 he led a small heart from dummy, and RHO couldn't help himself...up he flew with the Ace, and Lawrence escaped with an average board.
What's most wrong with 5N is that it might be misunderstood.
What is also wrong is that it is utterly unnecessary. Gerber or Finch, even the non-professional versions, would work as well or better.

I almost always want partner to choose the grand.
I believe that the USA currently hold only the World Championship For People Who Still Bid Like Your Auntie Gladys - dburn
dunno how to play 4 card majors - JLOGIC
True but I know Standard American and what better reason could I have for playing Precision? - Hideous Hog
